Revisiting Roman And Greek Bath Houses

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

If there’s an omnipresence in history books, it’s the impressive structures of Greek and Roman influences. Up to this day, their impact on modern architecture is incomparable. Their bath houses are a force to reckon with, boasting of amazing designs, grand appearance and in our modern times, timeless appeal. You can add a touch of Greek and Roman influence to your bathroom for that classic bath house feel.

Space is vital. Depictions of the Greek and Roman bath houses (and rooms in general) are spacious. They never lacked of space but instead show grand areas. Having an attached sun room is a good idea to enlarge the bathroom. Have a big tub in the sun room but make sure that it provides privacy by using a one-way glass. Marble floors and furnishings are perfect Roman and Greek themes. Columns are fixtures that are associated with these themes, so you can add these design ideas too for a realistic look. Faucets, shower head, handles and even the tub can be in copper implements. Gold was used in the early times but unless you’re willing to spend a lump sum, copper is the next best thing.

You might think plants are so out of place in a bathroom, but adding a few potted and hanging plants can create the look of the ancient bath houses, which were commonly outdoors. Therefore, the plants will give the natural scenic feel as well as add extra element of seclusion. Soft white linens that are loose and flowing are will make perfect drapes. You can enclose the sun room tub with this fabric for a royalty effect.

To add a bit of color, use an area rug. Traditional Greek and Roman patterns can be found in a local rug shop. This will strengthen your theme while adding comfort and color. Your rug should contain the colors of both the plants used in the room as well as any decorative items.

For decor I suggest urns and decorative bottles. These items will be dual purpose. Use the urns to hold plants or towels and other bathroom necessities. The bottles will look even more decorative when filled with bath salts or oils. To prevent clutter group these in design clusters in the corners of the rooms or around the walls and columns.

Bath houses may not be a common practice nowadays but the design influence of the early Greeks and Romans has a lasting effect. The elegance that is a trademark of this theme will make your bathroom unique and creatively daring, which defies the traditional concept of a bathroom interior.

Make A Splash In The Bathroom For $500

Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010

Bathroom redecorating takes on a new meaning with a very affordable $500 budget.

First, buy good cleaning products. Decorating a space must start with cleaning and organizing to achieve maximum positive results. No matter how you accessorize your bathroom but if there’s mildew, stains and clutter everywhere, the concept of bathroom improvement is defeated. Scrub, wash, polish and what-have-you. Make friends with your cleaning products and you’ll be welcoming a sparkling new bathroom.

Once you’ve finished your chemistry lesson in the bathroom, spruce things up with fresh paint. Blue is one of the best shades for a bathroom, since practically everyone loves it and it’s uplifting in such a small space. Plan on spending about $30 for paint.

The shower curtain is perhaps the most overused bathroom item. It gets constantly wet, dries up, then gets wet again. Plus, it doesn’t get changed that often, does it? Set aside $25 for a nice shower curtain.

Here’s the tricky part. Swap out the existing cabinets and wash stands for new bathroom “furniture.” If you have built-in cabinets, this can be a real chore, so you might want to enlist the help of a more experienced and knowledgeable friend or relative if you’re not up to speed on this kind of change. Look for bathroom furniture sets that come with combinations such as a wash-basin base or cabinet, a tall cabinet, a wall shelf, a mirror with shelf and another base cabinet. These sets provide sufficient storage space and are usually made with surfaces that are easy to clean. If it all won’t fit in your bathroom, you can easily sell the leftovers and recoup some of your investment. Cost of a set like this is around $200.

Invest $40 for a new showerhead, especially if your old one has already turned a rusty color and whisks water instead of “showers” it.

Finish the decorating work by accessorizing. You don’t have to crowd the bathroom with unnecessary things like porcelains, photos and souvenir items. Simple yet relevant decors will make an impression without eating up space. Think scented candles, oil burner, flowers and vase, a plant or two, hooks for your towels, waste can or hamper and a complementing area rug with a color or design that fits the bathroom’s new hue.

With the remaining money, you can splurge on fluffy new towels and bathrobes. Set aside extra pieces for your guests.

Our best hint for Home Design, is to use area rugs – and the outdoor rugs will suit any modern furnishings.

Bathroom Decor Made Elegant

Saturday, February 20th, 2010

When you think of a room in your house that is private you will first think of your bedroom. However, another room where you have private time is the bathroom. This room can be one where you relax away from the family taking a bath and relaxing after a long day at the office. Making an elegant bathroom that you feel comfortable in can be easy.

There are people who really think and take time out and even spend so much to give their bathrooms a sense of their identity. They want to make sure that when somebody else uses the room, a part of their self is expressed through the bathroom decor and accents that they have inside it. Others just want to make their guests at home and as comfortable as they can be when using their bathrooms.

A simple way to change the look of your bathroom is by adding in a bath rug. These will come in all shapes and sizes, but really most bathrooms are a bit smaller so your choices may not be as wide spread as you’d like. Try to make sure that the rug will go with the rest of the decor that is already there but you can bring out a color that most people may not notice.

If you want a rug that will cover the whole floor, than you should measure it very carefully. You need to leave an inch around the rug from each wall. You can easily get this measured and set up right by putting tape on the floor to mark where the rug will need to be placed.

Getting different designs on the rug is a nice way to add some personality to the bathroom. Try something like stripes or checks to add in a nice look that will catch your and others eyes. Just make sure that you have the rug match with other things that are in your bathroom too.

Adding in a rug is a great and inexpensive way to change around the bathroom in your home. Getting a rug that is comfortable and adds to the room in either color or design is easy to do just make sure that it goes with the room, or you may need to spend more money to fix it up better. Be creative when you go and pick out a rug for your bathroom.

Make Your Bathroom Look Larger

Monday, February 8th, 2010

A small bathroom can sometimes be a real bore – basic, uncomfortable and plain. Nothing special right? How else would you call a small space that is often seen as only a functional place?

Surprise! Your small bathroom doesn’t have to fall under this category. It can be a special nook in your house. Sure, a minute space compared to the other rooms but one that is cozy, comfortable and cute!

Maximize the use of mirrors. Mirrors create the illusion of a bigger area, as well as reflect light, thus making a space look brighter. Have a large mirror in the bathroom. Ideal place is behind the bathroom sink.

Be a minimalist in your design approach. Select key items to accessorize your bathroom instead of displaying too many things. Remember, you only have a limited space and the more objects you use, the more space you eat up. Plus, too many items create a crowded look.

Don’t worry about not being too fancy with dividing the shower area from the rest of the bathroom (with what little space is left). A shower door will only contract the appearance of the bathroom. This is known as visual obstruction. It’s better to use a shower curtain that you can leave open when not in use for a more airy look.

Next, create an illusion of a bigger space by using the right lighting. Dim light may be all soft and warm but if not adjusted properly, it can make your small bathroom look even smaller.

Avoid using too many decorations to open up space. Only use those that you need. Similarly, organize your bath essentials by using containers instead of letting your stuff lie around. A messy bathroom is not only a major turn off but also makes it more crowded.

Use colors not only for the bathroom walls but also for the floor. No need to change the flooring. The mere use of a light-colored area rug adds to the wide-enhancing quality and brings a cheery look to the room. It’s also nice to feel a soft fabric under your feet after taking a shower.

These are simple techniques but guaranteed to make your bathroom look better and bigger. Take note of the color, lighting and proper decors and you will never have plain, boring bathroom to speak of.

Remodeling Tips For The Bathroom

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

Bathroom remodeling can add value to your home, even if done on a budget. This can add value to your home, especially if you stick to your budget. The following outlines some useful tips to get you going.

The ceiling is one are that many people overlook but can be put to good use. I have found that an ornate, antique looking ceiling is very effective. A way to achieve this is to wallpaper the ceiling with a textured wallpaper and then paint with a water resistant paint. This is an inexpensive way, often under one hundred dollars to get a great looking ceiling.

Many nice hotel bathrooms have a sense and feeling of space and luxury. I have found a great way to add similar luxury on a budget. Fix a curved shower rod around your shower to get the same sort of feel. A double curved rod is great for adding a second liner curtain to get the feeling of even more luxury.

The vanity lighting in many bathrooms often looks tired and old. removing these fixtures and replacing new vanity lighting is a great way to add new style to the bathroom on a budget. Many home improvement stores such as Home Depot and Lowe’s stock loads of lighting fixtures. I would advise looking at them in person rather than buying online.

A great yet inexpensive way to make an improvement is to paint the bathroom. Picking neutral bold colors can really make a statement. Buying bathroom specific paint is a good idea as it will often be water resistant and mildew and mold growth resistant. To add that little extra touch of style, go for a matching bath mat and shower curtain.

Integral to most bathroom designs is the bathroom vanities. If these are old and tired, you can guarantee that your bathroom will look the same. You have a choice of either replacing the countertops or perhaps tiling over them. It is possible to get granite tiles to get a nice modern look. If you have a granite dealer near you, then it may be possible to get an offcut from a larger kitchen worktop to use as a bathroom vanity top. Combine this with a fresh lick of paint and you will have a new, stunning looking bathroom.

Any remodeling projects in the bathroom can be difficult especially if you have a budget to stick to. Following these tips can help you get your dream looking bathroom without having to spend huge amounts of money.

Decorating your Bathroom

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

The bathroom is a highly functional room in the house. Without it, well you can just imagine how difficult life must be. Unfortunately, it is often neglected when it’s time to redecorate with the misconception that it is a tedious and expensive task. This article will prove otherwise…

To initiate the makeover of your bathroom it is necessary to decrease clutter. Take everything out of your cabinets/vanities and countertops. Go through all the products and decide what you really need. The items that are a must have store them temporarily in a spot where you can easily store find them later. Everything else you don’t need get rid of it. Figure out a plan to get organized. Next, you will head to your favorite discount store for storage devices. Look for plastic boxes, storage bins, drawer dividers, and clear cosmetic bags. These can come in different colors so if you find a set you really love consider adding their color scheme to your bathroom.

Towel bars will be a great addition also. It is amazing how much adding a towel bar can change the bathroom. If you have the space available, put up a bar for each person in the family. This is a way for you and you family to remember which towel belongs to whom and which towels are clean or dirty. When you hang the towel racks be careful where you place them. Do not place racks to close to heating vents. When the towel is hanging you don’t want it right over the vent. If you do not have room for towel racks, another option is to buy some decorative hooks to go by the shower. These can be used to hang robes as well as towels.

Design the bathroom with stenciled patterns on the walls, window, mirror and/or ceiling. Repainting might cost you some, so a simple artwork on the walls can also make the bathroom look better. A good idea for a wall decor is a nice photo or painting.

Because changing the flooring costs a lot, a good cleaning and the addition of an area rug will make the bathroom look good as new. Even better, you’ll have a fabric that will absorb spilled water on the floor from your showers and that will keep your feet warm from the cool tiles. Be sure to purchase an area rug with the right size. If you have a big bathroom, then the size isn’t really a problem, but if there’s limited space, make certain that the rug fits right on the spot.

Lastly, maintain cleanliness in your bathroom. This doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. As long as you have handy cleaning products, you’re all set. No amount of bright colors, area rugs or stencils can make your bathroom nice if it’s unclean. A bathroom with minimal decors looks far better than a highly-decorated but messy bathroom.

You can plan a good decor by even consulting a qualified designer who can help you to transform your bathroom on a budget and make it look more attractive and appealing.

The first thing to remember while designing a bathroom decor is to have the right kind of flooring. Choosing right toilets for the bathroom is very important for providing greater comfort and saving space in case you have a small bathroom. Wall mounted toilets can be a good choice which helps in easy cleaning and saves your time and effort as well. You can chose from plenty of sophisticated designs in toilets, which are available right from the gravity flush toilets, and the vacuum operated ones. Today, you have plenty of options while choosing bathroom sinks made using different materials including glass, ceramic, porcelain, granite and marble. If you are interested in choosing a simple sink for your bathroom, then pedestal sinks can be a good choice.

Finally, don’t forget the cabinets or any other storage in the bathroom. Now is the time to sort your bathroom essentials and throw away items you no longer use. Bringing The Ocean Vibe To Your Bathroom

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

The ocean probably evokes certain distinct associations such as the soothing sand, warm sun and refreshing waves. It is one of those themes that many people love to incorporate into their bathrooms. As one of the first places you visit every morning, the space could definitely use a relaxed and soothing ambiance. Here are some useful tips for creating an ocean-inspired bathroom without spending an ocean of money on decor.

Repainting the walls is one of the cheapest ways to dramatically change the visual impact of any room. This holds true for bathroom renovations: what you do to the walls has a huge visual effect on the overall outcome of the space. You could opt for a calming pastel color like sea blue and tan to simulate the water of the ocean and the sand around it. A shell- or starfish-printed wallpaper could also contribute a fanciful, ocean-themed touch.

Adding visual aides like a mural of the ocean or the beach gives an extra jolt of realistic touch to the theme. It’s like taking a shower in a resort bathroom! Try an artwork of the beach, white or tan sand, waves, blue sky, some sailboats and chaise lounges to enhance the bathroom walls. Everyday is a day at the beach.

But that beachy ambiance can go far beyond just your walls. An area rug or even a small foot rug can add a lot to the look and feel of the bathroom. Color can be a big consideration; area rugs in tan to simulate sand or in bright blue to simulate water help complete the ocean feel. Starfish- or fish-shaped foot rugs add interest to an otherwise boring tile floor. There are lots of places for a rug around your bathroom: in front of the door, facing the sink and before the shower area are just some of the possible places for a rug. Just make sure that the rugs you choose are durable and either washable or waterproof.

Incorporate the beach colors as much as you can for maximum effect. It can be used as the color of the bathroom essential containers, cabinets, towels, shower curtain or add-ons to the mirror frame, faucet details or cabinet handles.

Accessories such as pebbles, scented and colorful candles and stickers complete the look. The bathroom will be a place of function and beauty. Bring out the beach babe in you and transform your bathroom into a resort-type and natural living space at home.

A New Look In Bathroom Decor

Saturday, December 19th, 2009

As you know the bathroom may be the first room you actually see when you wake up in the morning. This may set the mood which you awake to so it should be designed to brighten your day rather than make it drab. If you are lucky enough to indulge into a whirlpool spa bath tub, you’ll never want to bathe in a regular bath tub again! Usually larger bathrooms which are shown in the master suite will have a duel counter top with two sinks which is very nice for the man and woman of the family to have their own space for their items. Many times you want the master suite bathroom to be elegant and comfortable yet contemporary rather than a child’s bathroom which may be bright and energetic.

Most fixtures come in white or bone colors and are popular when it comes to chrome faucets. Brass accents are the latest trend when it comes to bathroom fixtures. Corner shelves in a corner shower are a part of the contemporary bathroom scene. Steel bathtubs have a traditional look and are much stronger and durable.

As with any style which you design for a room the light fixtures are a great focal point among giving you that proper lighting which you need in a bathroom. You can either choose something funky for a child’s bathroom or a more modern look above your sink and vanity. Try avoiding neon lights since they aren’t too natural and will give someone whom applies their make up in this room an odd look to their skin tone. If you are able to, use as much natural light from a sunroof or windows as much as possible in a bathroom.

Claw foot bath tubs are from the past but very popular in many bathrooms yet these days. This will bring modern and antique looks to your bathroom but yet a very great style. If you aren’t someone for a glass shower stall door, try frosting it so you get that privacy which you may be lacking. It’s very simple and easy to apply.

No bathroom is complete without a bathroom rug. Bathroom rugs are available in any shape color, size, and style imaginable. There is a rug for every taste out there. There are contemporary round bathroom rugs and shaggy big bathroom rugs. A rug like this will allow you to update your bathroom just by changing the rug and some of the basic accessories in the bathroom. This way you don’t have to redecorate the entire room, just change the rug.

People who have various tastes and who are frequently changing and evolving their tastes should choose more neutral colors and plain styles that can be given different looks by just switching a few things around. Porcelain combinations are quite traditional and allow you redecorate very easily. There are basic faucets such as chrome and brass combinations that work best with the neutral bathroom scheme. Gooseneck and waterfall faucets are quite modern and are actually considered to be trendy. Remember that when remodeling or designing a bathroom for someone with a physical disability that the bathroom needs to be fully functional for them. If you have a high traffic bathroom, make sure that you use decorations that are much more durable and will not damage easily along with neutral colors that will not show scuff marks as easily.

Keep up to date with Interior Design trends and enhance your home with round outdoor rugs.

Make Your Bathroom A Functional And Appealing Space

Sunday, December 13th, 2009

Are you about ready to decorate your bathroom? I am! I’ve had the same bathroom look for the past… I can’t even recall for how long now. I take pride in having a clean bathroom. Almost sterile actually. The thing is, I’m getting bored with seeing the same bathroom for years. I want it to have a new do. It’s time for a makeover.

When considering your budget decide the main things that you want to do. Do you need to paint the walls? Are you going to buy new rugs for your bathroom? Is your bathroom in need of new towels and shower curtains?

Decorating on a budget is not really a hindrance because of the discount stores and thrift shops that are everywhere. You can purchase good finds for a lot less. You can shop for your linens, towels, containers, shower curtains, etc, in these cheaper outlets.

If you have a larger budget you may have a larger variety of items to choose from. Just remember that more expensive does not always mean better. You might find a shower curtain that you love at a department store, but don’t be afraid to look around at discount shops. Sometimes you will find something similar at a much better price!

You can apply the same theme to your bathroom as the rest of the house or choose a different one. Some nice bathroom designs are the beach theme where the colors of blue, white and green are calming; and the Greek design, a more sophisticated theme with marble flooring, ornate decors and drapes. Base your choice of shower curtains, area rug and towels from the motif of the bathroom to make the space look well-coordinated.

You should really think about the function of the bathroom as well. If it is a bathroom that your family uses often then you may want to buy some extra containers for storage. It is nice to have a magazine rack in the bathroom. If you don’t have a linen closet, large baskets make a nice decorative piece for storing towels and washcloths. Under sink storage is great for cosmetics, soaps and cleaning supplies. If the bathroom you are decorating is mainly used for guests then you may not need as much storage space. Just make sure your guest’s have a place to put their belongings.

I’m excited for this bathroom decorating project. I’m also thinking about the rugs, flowers, candles and vases I’ll add to make my bathroom prettier. Wow, brushing my teeth has never been more exciting!
