Maintaining Your New Metal Water Bottle

Wednesday, August 11th, 2010

It’s considered by many that aluminium and stainless steel water bottles help protect the environment as well as insure your health is protected too. Unlike temporary solutions, metal bottles are long lasting and reusable and can last a life time providing you look after it properly.

Read on further to learn the tricks of the trade to insure your container survives for years to come.

When you first purchase a stainless steel water container, manufacturers advice that you first rinse and wash the unit before use. The best advice I can give you is to let your new bottle soak in warm water for a period of 20 minutes.

One way of removing manufacturing residue is to let your bottle settle in warm soapy water for an extended period of time before rinsing and using.

For a more naturally washing solution you could always use vinegar. Vinegar reacts with steel and aluminium to help effectively cleanse the inside and out of the bottle.

As most stainless steel and aluminium water bottles eliminate leeching there really isn’t no need to thoroughly rinse out the inside of the bottle if intending to store a variety of liquids.

Even still, I recommend once in a while add a spoonful of baking soda inside the bottle as well as adding hot water and leave the solution to settle inside while you go to sleep so your container is fresh for use the following day.

Manufacturers such as SIGG have a propriety lining inside to prevent leaching in there aluminium bottles to prevent leaching and insure the containers are BPA free. As a word of caution I advice you don’t harshly scrub the inside of the bottle as over time the lining can deteriorate, also minimize how frequently you use bottles with internal linings to store hot fluids.

Follow the advice and tips I have shared with you to ensure your bottle stands the test of time, you won’t regret it!

Seeking The Responsibility Of Sustainable Palm Oil

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

The principles of sustainable palm oil promote the responsible production of palm oil to protect the environment as well as the economy of the regions where it is produced. The plantations of sustainable oil must adhere to certain principles and guidelines that help to protect and safeguard those involved in the industry from poor environmental practices. The origins of palm oil finds its roots in Africa. The seeds were then transferred to other areas around the world and palm trees were grown in other tropical regions.

Palm oil is a primary raw material for many food and nonfood industries. It is also used as a cheaper alternative for other types of oils. Over six million people are involved in the palm oil producing industry. Palm oil is produced primarily in the tropics, but is consumed all over the planet. The fruit of the palm grows all year long is each fruit has an abundant amount of oil.

There are many different types of oils that are derived from palm oil making it one of the largest and fastest growing agricultural industries in the world. But this growing demand for palm oil has raised many concerns on how certain producers are raising their crops and treating the land. Many have received criticism for not damaging the habitat.

These problems have resulted in a roundtable on sustainable oil to develop criteria and principles on how the palm oil can be produced responsibly. A group of companies got together to discuss sustainable palm oil production. They all work to create a greener and more sustainable industry. They have several guiding principles that all stakeholders must adhere to in order to keep the industry sustainable.

Promoting sustainable practices are very important to the future of the land as well as the economic survival of the people in these regions. Companies that have agreed to sustainable production of this oil adhere to certain principles of production. They agree to use green methods that are safe for the environment. This may range from the type of equipment used to till the land. It will also include the use of environmentally safe and natural pesticides.

Sustainable palm oil production is a responsible way to produce this highly used oil while giving back to the regions where the plant is farmed. This is a positive form of agriculture that is expanding all over the world. The Roundtable helps to make sure that companies are adhering to their principles of sustainable agriculture.

The Impact Of Hard Water From Your Domestic Supply

Tuesday, March 16th, 2010

Water which contains a high level of dissolved minerals is generally referred to as “hard water”. The two most important minerals are calciun and magnesium. Hard water has no health implications – but it can lead to the build up of mineral deposits in plumbing, heating systems, kettles, dishwashers and various other domestic appliances. It has a poorer performance than soft water when using soap and general detergent products – you get less lather.

Water, quite naturally filters through rock and soil, and during this process small quantities of minerals are dissolved and held in solution in the water. The level of hardness increases as the amount of magnesium and calcium in the solution rises.

There are two distinct types of water hardness – known as permanent and temporary hardness. Both of these are the result of mineral content in the water.

It is not possible to remove permanent hardness by boiling the water. This is caused by calcium and magnesium sulfates and chlorides which are contained in the water. However, despite its name, permanent water hardness can be removed – usually by the use of an ion exchange column – sometimes referred to as a “water softener”. Basically this removes calcium and magnesium ions from the water and replaces them with sodium.

Temporary hardness can be removed either by boiling the water or by the addition of lime. It is caused by a combination of calcium and bicarbonate ions in the water. Boiling the water causes the bicarbonate to form carbonates and removes calcium carbonate from the solution leaving water which is softer upon cooling.

Scaling, also known as limescale, is the result of mineral deposits formed after the hard water has evaporated. This scale can clog pipes, form deposits in kettles and reduce the effectiveness and working life span of domestic appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers.

However, there are some relatively simple and easy steps which you can take in order to combat the effect of hard water in your home.

Firstly, be sure to use the correct soaps and detergents. There are many liquid cleaners and washing powders which are specifically designed for use in areas with hard water supplies. Choosing the right one will not only get your clothes and dishes cleaner but will extend the lifespan of your household appliances by minimising limescale build up.

Secondly, reduce the temperature setting of your water boiler. The higher the water temperature is, the more mineral deposits are released from the water. These deposits will be transferred to your plumbing, your storage tank and any appliances which are connected to the hot water supply. Setting both your washing machine and dishwasher to operate at reduced temperatures (choose the right soaps and detergents for this) will also help.

Finally, if your main problem is that you are not satisfied with the taste of your tea or coffee then filtering the water will usually remove enough of the minerals to make quite a difference. You can fit a relatively inexpensive under sink filter (these are simple to install) or use a handy jug type filter – the Brita filter jug is a popular choice which comes in a variety of sizes and colours.

If you are having problems with hard water think about using a Brita water filter – there is a wide range of different types on offer. You can even get a Brita kettle if all you want is better tasting hot drinks.

How Safe Is The Water That Comes Out Your Tap?

Monday, March 15th, 2010

Nowadays, most people probably agree that we need to drink plenty of water in order to stay healthy, avoid dehydration and to function efficiently. The amount of water you require will vary according to your body mass and size, the ambient conditions you find yourself in and the level of physical activity in which you are engaged. However, most medical authorities currently suggest that your daily water intake should be between six and eight large glasses of water.

Medical advice such as this has been used in advertising campaigns by bottled water suppliers as a means of marketing their product. The market for bottled water is actually a fairly new development – but it is extremely large. Between 1997 and 2005 sales of bottled water more than doubled. Currently, over 200 billion bottles of water are sold worldwide every year.

The result of this is an enormous number of empty plastic bottles being thrown out in the trash. A small proportion of these (less than 25% according to current estimates) are recycled. The large majority end up in landfill. According to Wikipedia, if those empty bottles were lined up nose to tail, the distance covered would be equivalent to going to the moon and back 56 times!

The carbon emissions generated, both to manufacture the bottles and then to transport the finished product to its final destination, is also a cause for concern. It’s an astounding fact that three times more water is used in the production of the bottles than they will contain when they are dispatched.

Simply put, bottled water is an environmental disaster. Of course, you may be more concerned with your own health than that of the planet’s – which may be perfectly understandable in certain cases. The trouble with this line of thought is that there is absolutely no evidence that bottled water is in any way better for your health than common or garden tap water.

Tap water in North America and Europe is perfectly safe to drink and is subject to stringent checks. Bottled water has been found to contain uranium and estrogen chemicals. Some of the chemicals found in bottled water “leech” from the plastic (PET) bottles. It’s also established that many bottled waters contain, along with other minerals, salt – which is not very good for your blood pressure.

The only feasible reason for using bottled water would be if you prefer the taste. However, blind taste tests have shown that the large majority of consumers are unable to tell the difference between bottled water and tap water. Of course, if your home is situated in an area supplied with hard water, or if you really can’t stand the taste of the water from the tap (possibly due to chlorine which is sometimes added to the water in order to kill off bacteria) you may like to consider some other alternatives.

You could consider the use of a home filtration system. This would be better for your health, better for the environment and significantly cheaper than buying bottled water. Whole house filtration systems are available, as are under sink filters, tap mounted filters and even simple jug filters. Any one of these solutions will filter out contaminants, improve the taste and reduce the effects of water hardness in an environmentally friendly manner.

Get great tasting water in an economical and environmentally friendly manner with a Brita water filter – or why not try a Brita kettle for great tasting hot drinks?

All about Mexican Rice

Monday, March 15th, 2010

If you have ever eaten at a Mexican restaurant, you have probably had a version of Mexican rice. This tomato and spice flavored rice has become a permanent fixture in Mexican cuisine. It was not always so, however. Rice did not grow in Mexico originally. It was introduced to Mexico from the Philippines. The Spanish found that rice grew very well around Veracruz and the rest is history.

Rice is a traditional food served at lunch in Mexico. It may be accompanied by fish or beans. The rice and beans that you find taking up half your plate at Mexican restaurants is not the way it is served in Mexico. Rice is also used for many other dishes besides this savory dish. It is used in desserts, pastries and horchata, which is a Mexican drink that is gaining in popularity around the world.

In Mexico, rice is often served in a pilaf style. What this means is the rice is browned before being simmered in broth. The rice is seasoned by adding carrots, peas, onions and other vegetables while the rice cooks. In some parts of Mexico, a creamier rice may be served that is similar to risotto.

A cazuela is a clay vessel that was traditionally used to cook rice. It gives the rice an earthy flavor. Rice is soaked first, drained, and then fried until it is brown. Broth or other liquid is added so the rice can simmer until it is done.

Mexican rice should be nice and fluffy. To get fluffy rice, you need to rinse the rice before cooking. Keep rinsing until the water runs clear. The water washes the extra starch off of the rice, which makes it sticky. You can also soak your rice ahead of time. This lessens your cooking time and helps the rice absorb more flavors during cooking. Long grain rice is preferred in Mexico, but medium grain rice also works very well.

Do not know what to do with leftover rice? Freeze it! Spread out a sheet of heavy duty aluminum foil and spread out the rice in a flat manner. Seal up the foil and stick it in the freezer. They stack very well and you do not need to thaw it to reheat. Just pop the foil packet into the oven at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 minutes. You cannot get any easier than this!

When you choose a Mexican rice recipe, follow the directions carefully for the best results. You may be adding ingredients like olive oil, carrots, parsley, and chilies. They will add a lot of flavor to your finished meal. Serve up your rice with a simply prepared fish or other entre.

Taking the time to learn how to prepare Mexican rice will add a lot more authenticity to your Mexican cooking. With some practice, you will be able to make a nice Mexican rice without even thinking twice. Your family will love the richness of the flavor. It is a nice change from pasta or potatoes.

Why is Coffee So Successful?

Friday, March 12th, 2010

Coffee is loved all over the globe, in fact around a billion cups of coffee are consumed every day! Which works out to over 10,000 a second! So what is it that makes it so popular? Let’s have a look at some of the reasons here:

Caffeine - This is probably the main thing that comes to mind when you think of coffee, the injection of energy that it gives you. Yet not everyone loves caffeine and about 10% of the coffee consumed is decaffeinated, I got off the caffeine rollercoaster years ago so I fall into that camp too.

Caffeine is actually a stimulant which is why people love it so much. When you wake up in the morning and you have to drag yourself out of your comfy bed and down into the cold kitchen, then people like to have a quick ‘pick me up’ to get them started on their way. After you drink your coffee and the caffeine kicks in then your tiredness falls away and you feel alert and ready to face the day. Caffeine also raises your dopamine levels (like an amphetamine does) which makes you feel good, another reason people love it!

The thing most people ignore though is that caffeine is actually a psychoactive drug, and as such you can get addicted to it. This is particularly true as the effects that we enjoy from our coffee will start to wear off after an hour or so (longer in people who aren’t used to it) and then you actually crash and feel worse and more tired than before, so of course you have another cup to pick you back up again!

Taste - We have access to all sorts of fizzy and sweet drinks in our daily lives, but coffee is an altogether different taste sensation. Coffee is more of a savoury taste than a sweet taste, and the fact it is warm is a great comfort on a cold winter evening.

Social reasons - When you go round to see a friend, what is the first thing they ask you? If you’d like a cup of tea or coffee! It has become such a big part of our daily routine that you can’t escape it, everyone is drinking it and you can get access to it in the most obscure of places. So even if you don’t drink it a lot, then you will find yourself nursing a cup at some time or another when you are out and about.

Temperature - If we didn’t have coffee and tea, then it is hard to think of other warm drinks that would fill that void. There is something comforting, as well as warming of course, about having a warm drink, and personally I prefer it to any other kind of drink out there.

So the world is firmly in the grip of coffeemania and I don’t see that slowing up anytime soon, it has become a welcome fixture in our lives. Anyway I’m off to put the kettle on – do you fancy a cup?

A great way to make real coffee is with a vacuum coffee maker, it makes a great tasting brew and it is fun to watch! Consider getting a Bodum Santos if you do want a vacuum coffee maker.

Learning New Methods of Cooking Mexican Cuisine

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

While you may be familiar with many methods of cooking used in Mexico, there are a few that you may want to learn about. Sure, you have grilled, fried, and boiled food before. But have you ever used a steaming bucket? What about a molcajete?

Steaming is a popular method in Mexican cookery. A dish known as barbacoa is cooked by wrapping meat in a cactus or banana leaf and steaming it over water that is boiling inside a pit. Steaming buckets are the traditional way to cook tamales. Steam keeps the masa on the outside of the filling moist. Today, many Mexican cooks use special kettles that allow them to cook many types of tamale at the same time. Sweating is another method used, especially to remove the skin on fresh chilies. Onions and chilies are also soaked frequently to make them a bit more mild. Letting them soak in milk or a water and vinegar solution for half an hour to an hour will remove some of the heat.

Are you still wondering about the molcajete? It is a mortar and pestle that is used to grind or mash herbs and other ingredients. A metate y mano is a large tool made of stone. It is made with a slight concave surface so corn and other ingredients can be ground. This was how corn was prepared to make masa.

Mexican cooks often simmer and boil their food. Vegetables and meat may be placed into a pot to slowly cook all day long. By dinner time, the meat is so tender it falls to pieces. The meat is then used for carnitas, tacos, and many other recipes.

Mexico is known for its grilled dishes. Cooking over an open flame adds so much to meats and vegetables. Many dishes require the meat to be marinated in spices and peppers before grilling. The results are then incorporated into many different recipes. Roasting and grilling increases the flavor of onions, chilies, tomatoes, and garlic. It causes the sugars in these foods to caramelize, resulting in intense flavor.

Stewing is a traditional method of cooking that has been used in Mexico since time immemorial. The long cooking times needed for proper stewing were common. At times, the vegetables and meats were cooked separately and then combined for further simmering before serving. Today, this is often done in a Dutch oven. In days gone by, this was done in a clay cazuela.

When you want to try some quick authentic Mexican recipes, think about what methods may appeal to you in your own kitchen. Learning new techniques is fun and expands your abilities in the kitchen. Do not be afraid to make a mistake or two. Your family will love trying new things that you make in the kitchen, especially if you are making Mexican food.

As you can see, there is so much to learn about Mexican foods. Their cooking methods of developing the delicious flavors in the food make this a never ending topic of interest for many.

If you enjoy making Mexican dishes, we have plenty of Mexican recipes at MexicanFoodRecipes.org including Mexican beef casserole, Spicy Mexican torte, baked chicken burritos and many more. Learning How to Use Mexican Spices

Wednesday, March 10th, 2010

Mexican herbs and spices truly make the meal. Without these ingredients, a Mexican recipe would be no different than many others. These herbs and spices give their all to make Mexican food the culinary delight that it is. It pays to learn a bit about them.

Probably the most well known seasoning in Mexico is chile powder. This is made by mixing many different chilies that have been dried and ground. Chilies are also used fresh or roasted. Chipotle is made from jalapeno peppers that have been smoked and dried. Ancho is made from a chile with a sweet, fruity flavor. Many commercial chile powders that are found at the store are made of a combination of chilies, salt, oregano, garlic, coriander, and cumin.

Epazote is an herb that you can grow in your garden. Some call it Mexican tea. This herb is traditionally used in bean dishes to not only add flavor but to help digestive upsets that beans can cause. A few leaves are added while the beans are cooking. Be careful when you use epazote because it is very potent. Large quantities of this herb can be toxic.

Annatto seeds give food a distinctive flavor and a yellow coloring. It is often used in rice dishes and sauces. The seeds should be soaked in water for at least an hour. After soaking, they are crushed. Sometimes recipes call for the water that the seeds were soaked in; others call for the seeds themselves. They are often used in marinades along with other spices.

Cilantro is a popular herb that resembles flat leaf parsley. They are actually the leaves produced by the coriander plant. This herb is always used fresh. The flavor is tangy with a pungent quality that really makes a dish sing. It adds a nice bright note to rice, moles, salsas, beans, soups and stews.

The seeds of the cumin plant are often used in Mexican cooking. Cumin seeds can be used ground into powder or whole. It is often used with chile powder to create a nice balance in the flavors. Soups, stews and many other dishes are better after you add cumin. Azafran, also known as safflower or Mexican saffron, adds flavor and color to a dish, making it a beautiful yellow. This spice is used sparingly because it can be bitter. It is frequently added to rice or seafood.

If you study authentic Mexican food recipes you will see these spices used frequently, along with others such as thyme and oregano. In Mexico, they have a unique type of oregano that is earthier in flavor than Italian oregano. You can find this Mexican oregano in some herb catalogs. Unless you live in an area with a large Mexican population, it may be difficult to find it in local nurseries or grocery stores.

Understanding how to develop the flavors of Mexico will involve learning about the spices and herbs they use in cooking. That authentic Mexican flavor you want cannot be developed without them. Use these spices the right way and you will find your recipes turn out better than ever. Learning how to use these spices will change your cooking for the better.

Learn the truth about Mexican food history and find out more about the wonderful recipes that make MexicanFoodRecipes.org a favorite with the whole family.

Multi Tiered Kitchen Cabinet Organization Systems

Tuesday, March 9th, 2010

A kitchen cabinet organizer system offers a perfect solution to eliminate clutter in a cupboard or shelf and comes styled as a 1 to 3-tiered rack, turntable, shelves or drawers.

A space-saving organizer system, with multiple levels, is an ideal piece of kitchenware to assist in tidying an often cluttered under sink cabinet or shelve. An split-level storage rack is perfect to make all supplies easier to locate, even those concealing at the rear of a cupboard.

A pullout organizer comes in a rugged, dependable material, such as all-natural wood, polypropylene or metal-coated wire, while a non-skid surface often features on some flat surface shelves to eliminate sliding. An organizer with a wooden finish often complements most existing kitchen cupboards, while a coated wire rack is simple to clean and maintain.

A split-level rack, in most cases, comes with equal sized shelves for maximum load capacity, although it is possible to locate cabinet organizers with a bottom shelf at full-size, while the top shelve is half-size. This results in a more practical solution for storage large sized bottles or containers.

Copco, ClosetMaid, and Household Essentials all produce a line of innovative 1, 2, or 3 tiered kitchen organization systems, with some shelves able to expand by up to 28-inches. This ensures sufficient space to store a vast selection of kitchen supplies, such as pet food, cleaning supplies or Tupperware items in a tidy manner.

Apart from the pullout styled organizers, one more choice is the turntable styled units. A circular cabinet of this nature is able to rotate in a complete circle for ease in finding spices, glasses, condiments of similar small-sized items. And to stop items moving as the turntable rotates, a non-slip base and a raised outer rim often feature.

A kitchen cupboard organizer offers a simple, yet effective solution to help keep clutter down to the bare minimum, while still offering come ease in reaching all supplies, even those concealed at the back.
