No home decorating project would be complete without taking fabric into consideration. A room devoid of any fabric whatsoever is cold and uninviting. A well thought-out application of fabrics brightens a room and brings a sense of warmth and completeness. Properly chosen fabrics have a way of knitting together the various elements of the room into a pleasing whole. By “fabrics” we mean the bed coverings, drapes and curtains, couch and sofa material, tablecloths, etc. As with all the elements of home decorating, a good deal of forethought and planning must go into the selection of the fabrics to be used.
How do you choose the right fabric? By deciding on a theme. Whether it’s Victorian, Oriental, country style, beach or southern style, the choice of fabric and other decorating elements are reflections of the room’s theme.
Fabric should blend well with the rest of the room. The theme will also dictate if the fabric should be satin or silk, velvet, cotton, leather, polyester, etc. Fabrics have varying colors and prints as well, therefore coordinate it with the other furnishings for a balanced room interior.
An issue to be considered is that of the care of your fabrics. Fabrics are not the same when it comes to washing or cleaning. They are different in terms of stain resistance, wrinkle resistance, shrinkage, etc. Some fabrics are more susceptible to sunlight damage than others. You should make note of the care instructions on the labels of your fabric items and follow them closely. Since the fabrics will be with you for a good while you want to preserve their color and aesthetics for as long as possible.
The room theme will be reflected in the choices to be made for the other elements of the room-the furniture, the floor coverings, the lighting, and the paint. For example, you will want to consider the color and pattern of the area rugs in choosing the fabrics of the room. The rugs and the fabric chosen should complement each other in creating the themed look you are seeking. The various elements of the room should present a coordinated picture with the individual aspects supporting one another rather than competing for attention.
Take your time in choosing. It’s better to be sure so you can be assured of the right interior for your room. Feel free to touch the fabrics so you’ll have an idea how they feel when already decorated in your living room or bedroom. Go through the patterns and colors carefully and bear in mind your motif so you can pick out the fabric with the right color and print. No home decorating is ever complete without fabrics, so take your sweet time in finding the perfect one.
