After Surviving Earthquakes And Air Raids

Sunday, July 25th, 2010

The day started like any other day. At school in the middle of basketball practice, I had just made my layup. Then I felt something out of place. At first I couldn’t put my finger on it, then I knew. The ground was shaking. Slowly, the ground started moving more, until the basketball court was violently shuddering and creaking under my feet. Earthquake.

Anyone who’s ever been in an earthquake or survived an air raid knows the fear that wraps around your gut and curls up your spine. For one minute life as you’ve always known it ceases to exist. What happens to your life after that one long torturous minute depends on a million factors. Whether you were late for that meeting on the 21st floor, happened to be underground, whether your family was on vacation, or whether your neighbor decided to turn the lights on, suddenly has grave consequences.

Survivors of earthquakes and explosions often reenact that horrible day and wonder what would have happened if they’d done things differently. They wonder what would have happened if they’d just gotten out of bed on time that day or if things had gone differently if their sibling would still be alive. They also have an uncanny talent for detecting movement or abnormal noises.

After the earthquake my family survived, my young brother was shaky and scared. Anytime someone shook the table or bumped into his bed, he’d look up with scared wide eyes wondering if the new earthquake would take his life. People that have suffered through an earthquake or survived the blast of a bomb, understand what I’m talking about. Menial things stab you with shafts of fear. A firework sounds like a bomb, and a light swaying next to a fan makes you think an earthquake is hitting.

Earthquakes and bombs can’t be avoided. The best we can do is know the closest exit or the safest place to be when they strike. Not every danger in life is unpreventable though. There are some things such as the safety of your home that can be controlled. Making sure your home has a security system is important in protecting your home. While you still can’t stop an earthquake, or redirect a bomb, at least you can know you’ve done your best in the areas you can control.

Handling Frustration

Sunday, July 4th, 2010

From time to time, you are bound to be confronted with frustration, and there is no way we can avoid this as it is part of our lives. That said, you need to know how to deal with them effectively and constructively instead of destructively where you can actually hurt others while doing so.

In itself, frustration is a harmless feeling, however the way we choose to express it to others can bring huge inconvenience to ourselves, not to mention that it contributes to the other person’s frustration and stress too.

One strange thing about letting out your frustration is that it is a learned skilled, if you reflect back, you might be letting frustration out of you the same way your parents did! This is simply because it is a skill set that can be learned and thus we may learn exactly the same way our parents did it when we’re at a very young age.

Therefore, if frustration have somewhat caused some inconvenience in your life or in other people’s life, then it might be a good time to rethink how you can change just that.

Here are just some tips you can use to effectively deal with frustration.

-Showing others respects – One thing that we all sought as a society creature is to have other’s approval in terms of our opinions. Not able to gain that can quickly lead us to be frustrated, and as such what you need to do is learn how to give others respect in the first place. If you do not wish to have others imposing their ideas and opinion on you, why would you want yours to be imposed on them?

-Be self affirmed – One reason why we feel the need to have others accepting our ideas and opinion is because it affirms our self beliefs. Since getting others to accept your views can sometimes backfire on you, what you can do is to work on your own self-confident and be self affirmed enough to deal with rejection. With a true sense of yourself and a healthy self esteem, you will most likely face less frustrated.

-Know what you can’t control – Some things are just not meant to be control, no matter how hard you try. When you start understanding this, you will stop trying to save the world or change it to a better place, when you stop you will start to feel less frustrated due to your inability to change things around. As such, what you want to do is to stop worrying and get worked up by the things you cannot make a difference.

Failure to deal with frustration the effective and constructive way is a sure way to get you angry, and not to mention you will most likely lose respect from others as well. It is not to late to relearn how you deal with frustration and start leading a better and healthier life.

Ways To Enjoy The Outdoors

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

Enjoying the outdoors is one of the more relaxing activities we can indulge in, but it can be quite difficult with our daily schedules. It’s tough to find time after a long work day to get outside. However, we all know that relaxing and enjoying is a great way to reduce stress. There are many ways to get outside and enjoy at a minimal cost or at no-cost.

If you’re in a large city, it can be tough to get outside. The days can be stressful from the early morning, until the late hours. Big city people always feel rushed, but it’s nice to take a step back and relax. This stress can only lead to more stress! This guide will share some ways to get outside and enjoy the outdoors.

It’s not only important for you to get outdoors, but kids need to get out also. Head outside and throw the ball around with your kids. Or even better, take them to a baseball game if you can. Either one are a great way to spend time with your kids and be outdoors.

Most of us are guilty of crashing on the couch after dinner and flipping on the TV. Change it up a bit and go for a walk. If you spend thirty minutes walking you’ll get some exercise and some fresh air. It’s also a nice way to spend time with your spouse!

Summer is here and one of the best summer activities is a BBQ. Everyone loves being outdoors and taking down some hot dogs and burgers. Instead of your dinner parties in the dining room, get outside on the patio or deck and enjoy being outside.

If you’re lucky enough to have some room for a garden, try doing some work out there. Gardening can be a great way to reduce stress and add beauty to your yard at the same time. You can plant some gorgeous flowers or even grow some of your own veggies or fruit!

Every child needs to experience a camping trip at some point. If you haven’t gone yet, then get up and go! Eventually kids will lose interest in it, if they don’t know how fun it can be, so do it while you can. Bring some friends and relax by the camp fire while roasting some marshmallows!

Lowering Your Ever-Present Electric Bill

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

Before you moved out of your parent’s house you probably didn’t care how much the monthly phone bill was. Now that you’re out on your own, basic responsibilities like bills finally have your attention.

Now that you need to pay for the bills yourself, you tend to be more careful on how you use them. Here are a few tips on how to make the figures in your electric bill work to your favor.

Every time you are finished using any electronic device, whether the TV or your desktop computer, make sure that you unplug it. If you would notice, even after you turned off the TV, you still see a small red light near the power button and yes, that is energy consumed with no actual purpose.

Take some time to rearrange your refrigerator, putting items you use the most within easy reach. If necessary, place things in labeled canisters for an easy find. This will reduce the amount of time the door is open while you search for food items. A little bit of organization will save you both time and money.

Unplug the doorbell when you are not home because if you come to think about it, it does not make sense. If you unplug it, young children playing with their neighbor’s doorbell will not affect your electric bill at all.

Make sure you turn the AC off every time you go out. This is one thing that should never be on unless you are home cause they burn through the power.

Another option available nowadays is to purchase appliances and electronic devices that are energy efficient. These items are specifically designed to be green and save energy.

Don’t be fooled into thinking these hints won’t drop your bill. They might seem small on their own, but taken together they will definitely save you money. Money you can spend on other things.

How To Become A Donor

Monday, June 14th, 2010

One of the most inspiring movie of all time, 7 pounds by Will Smith portray how an act of compassion and selflessness can bring about the changes and happiness in other people’s life. While you might think that it is very complicated to go about becoming a donor, it is not. The act of donating your organs when you are deceased will no doubt make a world of difference to those who are in need of it.

Here is what you need to do to become a donor:

-Becoming a donor is as simple as filling up a form, and most states actually encourages this act. When you renew your driving license in your local Department of Motor Vehicle, you might be presented with this opportunity. Alternatively if you’ve known a donor or a friend who have signed up, simply ask about the procedure.

-When choosing to become a donor, you are presented with the option to allow certain parts of your body to be preserved and certain parts to be donated. If you have a preference, be sure to include it in your registration.

-When you received your donor card, be sure to always keep it close to you whenever you go. This way if anything happen they can find your card and honor your requests.

-You also need to inform your family members about your decision so that they can respect and honor your request. Complication can sometimes happen when the family members are in the dark, as such overwriting your donor request. As a donor, it is your responsibility to make sure that they have accepted your decision and will carry out your wish.

By listing yourself a donor, you are helping others who needs and deserves the transplant, because of the overwhelming demand for transplant and the strict criteria to be on a transplant list, you can be sure that your organs are put to good use once you’re deceased. Be sure to make a decision today if you’re planning to become a donor before it’s too late.

Reusing Is One Of The Steps To Help Our Planet

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010

While most Americans today would love to help the environment by recycling, many aren’t sure where to even start. This lack of information about the process of recycling, in addition to the common notions that recycling is expensive and time-consuming, all contribute to the fact that many citizens don’t bother recycling.

These assumptions couldn’t be farther from the truth. Recycling is actually very easy to get into; it can also be quite inexpensive and there are many ways to do it, meaning that everyone should be able to contribute in some way.

One of the easiest ways to recycle is to simply buy recycled paper. Anyone can do this, as recycled paper is sold right alongside the standard paper at any store.

By purchasing recycled paper, consumers are supporting the businesses of those who make an effort to protect the environment by recycling paper. They also reduce the waste that is created by purchasing standard paper, which simply goes into landfills.

Another great way to recycle, also dealing with office supplies, is to use re-manufactured ink cartridges. Using these cartridges keeps the plastic materials from simply being added to landfills.

Refilling ink cartridges instead of simply throwing them away and buying new ones is another way to make the cartridges last longer. When you refill a cartridge several times, you greatly reduce the amount of waste that would have been caused if you bought new cartridges each time.

Using rechargeable batteries are one more effective way to support recycling and sustainability. These batteries are incredibly efficient in that they’re not only less expensive than regular batteries, but they can provide as much energy as 1,000 standard batteries. They save a tremendous amount of waste from entering landfills.

It’s easy to see why rechargeable batteries are so valuable in reducing waste. They’re also cheaper by a huge margin.

As you can see, there are lots of simple and easy ways to recycle these days. As more people become aware of these methods and do their part to recycle, we’ll see the benefits in the form of a cleaner environment.

Agarikon Mushroom – Tree Fungus With Medicinal Ambitions

Saturday, April 17th, 2010

In a fascinating broadcast on National Public Radio, internationally renowned medicinal mushroom expert Paul Stamets tells his story of discovering the medicinal potential of agarikon, an extremely rare and threatened species of wood conk that requires century-old trees to grow. Agarikon is today all but extinct in Europe, its remaining distribution limited to the old growth forests on the North American West Coast.

Scientists have known for some time that mushrooms are not plants. Far from it. They are more closely related to animals and humans then they are to the vegetables we eat. Because of that, they are often at risk from the same bacteria and other “bugs” that cause diseases in humans. Being well aware of this fact, Stamets asked himself how agarikon – a perennial mushroom living for up to 50 years – managed to fight off diseases so well in the perpetually wet rainforests. It must possess a potent immune system, he concluded, with potential anti-bacterial and anti-viral compounds that may act as antibiotics for humans.

Stamets describes the agarikon conk as looking like a bee hive when viewed from the ground. Remember, they grow on the trunks of ancient tree giants, sometimes high up. (Use the agarikon-link on this page to view a picture of Paul Stamets holding an agarikon mushroom.) Please be aware that this is a threatened species and should be left alone in most cases. Just get out your digital camera if you are lucky enough to find a specimen. (Otherwise, no one may believe you.)

Using a proprietary extraction method on his organically cultivated agarikon, Stamets created an agarikon medicinal. He sent a sample of it to the Defense Department for testing within the BIO Shield Program, at a top security lab facility in Ft. Dietrich, Maryland. The BIO Shield Program is dedicated to finding remedies for use against bioterrorism threats and potential biological warfare agents, such as anthrax or smallpox.

Within this BIO Shield Program, tens of thousands of natural and manmade compounds have been tested for use against biological warfare pathogens. Drug discovery supervisor John Seacrest was happy to report on the radio show that the agarikon extract provided by Stamets had indeed been one of the few substances tested that had proved effective against smallpox related viruses.

Paul Stamets has since applied for a patent on a mushroom-based anti-viral drug. Boston investor John Norris is one of his financial backers. Mr. Norris believes in the project due in part to the fact that some individuals simply are not willing or not able to be vaccinated against smallpox or other potential biological warfare agents.

It’s also worth mentioning that Mr. Norris is a former second in command in the FDA hierarchy, and he believes that through his joint venture with Paul Stamets, they could soon be selling several hundred million doses of the Stamets agarikon extract to the armies of the United States, U.K., and Germany.

That may still be a few years into the future, though. Paul Stamets new mushroom related anti-viral medicine first has to stand up to exhaustive testing, and then eventually be approved for release by the FDA.

Note: The above article is intended for informational purposes only. Agarikon has not been approved by the FDA for use as a medicinal. Never use any herbal or mushroom-product for medicinal purposes unless advice to do so by a licensed medical practitioner.

Air Purifiers: Are They Worth It?

Tuesday, April 13th, 2010

Most families have done without an air purifier for generations – hundreds or even thousands of years, so what, you may be asking yourself is the rush to get one now? And it is true, there is a bit of a buzz about air purifiers at the moment. But do they work all right and are they worth the money?

The answers to both of these questions are not simple, but everyone would have to acquiesce that the motor revolves when you plug them in, so in that sense they do all work. Whether they are effective or not depends on which model you buy. There are some very useful air purifying units and there is a lot of junk too.

The really ineffective ones are the very cheap models, that are just not powerful enough and do not even enclose adequate filters, but leaving those aside, there are very good portable air purifiers and very good central air purifier systems.

So, the first thing you have to determine is whether you want a central or portable air purifying system. If you want to clean the air in your office at work or your caravan or trailer, then a good portable purifier will do the job very well. The reason why a portable purifier is not so good for the home is size. Your house is just too big for one portable air purifying unit.

If you locked yourself up in one room, then OK, but as soon as you open the door, or someone walks into the room, you have lost a lot of your clean air. Therefore, if you are thinking about purifying the air in your house, you really have to go for a central system, particularly if you already have ducting in place for a central heating or central air conditioning system.

If you are fortunate enough to have such a system then a powerful and very efficient air purification unit can be fitted near your existing blower in minutes in most cases. These devices will purify the air in your whole home at the same time, meaning that you can wander about your house, go about your daily business and leave interconnecting doors open at leisure. It is the only way to go if you have active children. This is often the cheapest option too, surprisingly.

If you are going to buy a portable model, note the dimensions of the largest room you are likely to use it in and work out the volume of air in that room (length x width x height). You will have to check that whichever air purifier you get can handle that volume of air. That information will be in sales literature. The cost of filters is an essential factor in the total cost of a purifier. How much are they and how often do they have to be changed? Can they be cleaned a few times before needing to be changed?

Think about why you want an air purifier. Is it because you want to combat a specific allergy? Is it because there is a smoker in the house? Is it because of pets? Or is it just because of increasing levels of general pollution from cars and industry? Whatever the reason, make sure that the air purification system you are thinking about purchasing can take filters that can take those substances from the air. Not all filters are identical – not all filters can filter everything.

Owen Jones, the author of this piece, writes on many subjects, but is currently involved with central air conditioner prices. If you are interested in Home Air Conditioning Systems, please click through to our site.

Inspiring Students to Give Back

Monday, April 12th, 2010

To quote an old joke, what’s the first rule of the army? Never volunteer! Among many students, this very definitely seems to be the motto, and they prefer to sit back and watch the more “go-getting” types volunteer.

This is a serious problem as volunteering is an important aspect of a young adult’s development. And how fair is it to ask the same students to volunteer again and again? You need to devise certain ways to make sure that your students are encouraged to volunteer.

You obviously cannot give your students financial rewards, or their work would not be considered as volunteering. But there are other things that you can do to make your students want to help volunteer in the community.

Based on the age of your students, one of the incentive plans can be a point system. You can award points to your students based on the amount of volunteer work they perform. The more they help others and volunteer, the more points they would earn. And at the end of the year, you can give away prizes or even special mention certificates to your students based on the point system.

Another trick would be to divide the class into volunteering groups. Volunteering duties can be rotated in these groups so that all the students get a chance to volunteer. You can also create a sense of competition and make it fun for the entire class.

Remember to always encourage your students. You should congratulate them on the quality of their work and highlight its significance to everyone in the class. This will encourage other students in the class to volunteer too.

If more volunteering inflates the students’ grades, then students would be encouraged to participate in any relevant programs.

Using all these tips can be quite effective in motivating your students to volunteer. Instill in the students the spirit of volunteering and mention how important it is.
